The German GP (locally known as Großer Preis von Deutschland) is held on Hockenheimring this year. Hockenheim is also the name of its town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located on Bertha Benz Memorial Route. Hockenheim and Nürburg have been fighting for the German GP for many years now. From 1951 until 1970 the German GP was held on Nürburgring. In 1971 Hockenheimring took over because they owned the safety concerns.

Since 1995 there two Grand Prix’s held in Germany, the European Grand Prix/Luxemburg Grand Prix on Nürburgring and the German Grand Prix on Hockenheimring. From 2007 there was decided that the German GP would be raced on Nürburgring in the uneven years (2007, 2009) and on the even years (2008, 2010) on Hockenheimring.

Originally the circuit of Hockeheimring was 8 km long, using roads in the forest, containing two long straights, making it a challenge to reach top speeds. In 1960 the track was shorten to 6.8 km and still was to dangerous, causing some serious crashes. In 2002 the Northside straight of the Circuit was shorten, making a dive into the south straight. Making it easier for spectators to follow the action and saver for the drivers.
