The Grand Prix of Australia has been on the Formula 1 calendar since 1985. Until 1995 the Australian Grand Prix was held at Adelaide street circuit. From 1996 the Australian Grand Prix was held at its current Albert Park venue in Melbourne. In 2006 Melbourne hosted the Commonwealth Games and the Formula 1 Australia skipped the F1 calendar of 2006.
Albert Park is located just outside the central business area near the beachside district of St. Kilda. The circuit is smooth but can be quite dusty and is fairly low-grip and tough on brakes. Drivers approach the first corner at more than 300 km/h. The race annually draws a crowd of around 400,000 over the four days. The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit is a street-based circuit around Albert Park Lake, only a couple of kilometers south of central Melbourne.
The parkland near the Albert Park Grand Prix was like much of the land in the Yarra delta, swampy, grassed with sparse tree cover, and with occasional lagoons, some quite large. The lagoon in Albert Park was one of those. The land was used for seasonal grazing, recreational hunting, rifle practice at the Butts (the original name of the Albert Park railway station) and for military training maneuvers between the Victoria Barracks, St. Kilda Road, and the battery on Port Phillip Bay at the end of Kerford Road.
